Blurb: James Beckwourth is an African American on an 1820's fur-trading expedition when he is captured by the Crow tribe. Among the Crow he rapidly becomes a vaunted leader. But the violence of Crow life leads him to ask himself, "Where do I really belong?"

synopsis:

Beckwourth starts as a hothead who struggles to prove himself, first among white society in St. Louis, then as a member of one of Ashley's fur trading expeditions. Captured by the Crow, he rapidly rises to a position of power and respect due to his fearlessness. He attains the rank of high chief with three wives and turns even his rivals into admirers. But the violence of Crow life gets to him, and he returns to St. Louis. There he has to defend himself from a former associate in a bar fight, so when he is called back to Crow country on a rescue mission, he goes willingly. Ultimately though, he decides that his place in life is neither with the Crow nor in St. Louis, but on the back of a horse, his own man, an adventurer.

About Bryan Ney (Los Angeles, California Author)

Bryan Ney

Bryan Ney writes historical fiction in sun drenched, star studded Malibu, California. His first novel, "Calamity Jane: how the West Began" combines a little-known episode in the early life of Calamity Jane with events that occurred just before she arrived in Montana as a teen. He is presently writing another historical fiction about the life of James Beckwourth, an African-American mountain man who in the 1820's was adopted into the Crow Indian tribe and rose to the level of war chief. A practicing physician, Dr. Ney is an occasional co-conspirator in his wife's reality television ventures, and he tolerates the household cats about as much as they tolerate him.
